M: Dà jiā hǎo! Huānyíng shōutīng Xiànzài Xué Hànyǔ. Wǒ shì ML.

S: Wǒ shì Stuart.

M: Jīn tiān shì fùxí kè. And three lessons ago we learnt to say something like, Three hours, ten minutes and five seconds.

S: So, using 以前 yǐqián, which means ‘before' or ‘ago', try to say, He went three hours, ten minutes and five seconds ago.

M: Did you say, 他三小时十分零五秒以前走了? Let's say it again. Tā sān xiǎoshí shí fēn líng wǔ miǎo yǐqián zǒu le.

S: And did you notice that we don't use a measure word for the hours, minutes and seconds?

M: So now say, They left one hour and twenty minutes ago.

S: Hěn hǎo. 他们一小时二十分钟以前走了 tāmen yì xiǎoshí èr shí fēnzhōng yǐqián zǒu le.

M: Ok, enough of that! We then started speaking about a more interesting thing.

S: Money, qián.

M: Everybody say, You must give ML one million dollars. Hěnhǎo. 你得给曼丽一百万美元 nǐ děi gěi ML yì bǎi wàn měiyuán.

S: Nǐ kāiwánxiào!

M: Now let's revise some big numbers. Remember how to say ‘one million'? Duìle. 一百万, a hundred 10,000s, yì bǎi wàn.
S: Remember, in Chinese we have this word wàn WAN wàn, meaning 10,000. So translating numbers quickly, whether from Chinese to English or vice versa, can really stress your brain. We need lots of practice, with money, of course. But first, how do we say ‘US dollar'?

M: Méi cuò. 美元 měiyuán. We can also say 美金 měijīn. 金 JIN jīn itself means ‘gold', but it's often used in compound words to mean ‘money'.

S: Using měijīn, ML will now say, ‘I have ten thousand dollars'.

M: 我有一万美金 wǒ yǒu yí wàn měijīn.

S: And you say, I have twenty thousand dollars.

M: Hěnhao! 我有两万美金, or, wǒ yǒu liǎng wàn měiyuán, both are ok.

S: And what is a 英镑 yīngbàng? Méi cuò. British pound, yīngbàng.

M: And Euro, that new stuff? Duìle, 欧元 ōuyuán. Now let's have a new one. How do we say Canada? Duìle. 加拿大 jiānádà. So guess what 加拿大元 jiānádàyuán means. Easy, Canadian dollar, jiānádà yuán, or simply, jiāyuán, jiāyuán.

S: Now, it's been a while since we gave you some homework. Get your pen ready. Now we'll give you some sentences to translate, and we'll check the answers in our next lesson.

M: First one, dì yī gè. How do we say, I need 10,000 pounds?

S: Next. I need 22,000 Canadian dollars.

M: I need 33,000 Euros.

S: He has 45,000 Canadian dollars.

M: I need 445,000 Canadian dollars.

S: I must give you 500,100 Canadian dollars.

M: I have 555,100 euros.

S: I have 2,400,000 dollars.

M: I must give you 3,500,000 pounds.

S: Sounds good, but… Lost, remember, is 丢了 diū le. So, last one. But, I lost 11,654,321 pounds.

M: Mmm. That's a lot of weight!

S: Silly. Zài jiàn. we help you learning Chinese, remember to visit the site !
