    "It’s over! Thank goodness!"

School was over and I was tired. I sat at the front of the school bus.

Janie, the driver, always tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere (气氛) by talking. I try to listen politely, but usually I’m too busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to.

"My father’s ill," she said to no one in particular (特别地). I could see worry in her eyes. I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students with a smile.

With a sudden chance of interest, I asked, "What’s wrong with him?"

With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered, "Heart trouble. " Her eyes lowered as she continued, "I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him.  " I couldn’t answer. My heart ached for her.

I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died.

I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.

Suddenly I realized Janie wasn’t only a bus driver, which was just her job. She had a whole world of family and cares too.

I shouldn’t have been so selfish. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged (判断) her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant.

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is "No". It is not a tool a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further: he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question into a large set of ideas about how the world works.

The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any change file scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the change in the conditions.

This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas are shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

64.  "knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The author says this to show__________.

    A. the importance of information

    B. the difference between carpenters and ordinary people

    C. the difference between scientists and ordinary people

    D. the importance of thinking

65. A sound scientific theory should be one that__________.

    A. works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other times

    B. leaves no room for improvement

    C. does not allow any change even under different conditions

    D. can be used for many purposes

66. What is the main idea of the passage.  ?

    A. Scientists are different from the ordinary people.

    B. The theory of relativity.

    C. Exactness is the secret of science.

    D. Exactness and way of using tools is the key to the making of a scientist.

Internet shopping is a new way of shopping. You no longer need to walk round hundreds of shops looking for the items you need. Nowadays, you can shop for just about anything from your armchair. All you need is a computer which is linked to the Internet. Shopping on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. In the United States, 50 percent of families have computers at home and almost one third are linked to the Internet. Americans spent over US $ 2.5 billion on Internet shopping ill 1998. This figure is expected to reach US $11 billion by the year 2004.

People can shop for a variety of products on the Internet. Physical products include items such as books, CDs, clothes and food. These types of products are the most common purchase through the Internet. You can also buy information products such as on-line news or magazine stories, or you can download computer software through the Internet. Services such as booking airline tickets, reserving hotels or renting cars are also available in the Internet. You can also go shopping on file Internet for entertainment services and take part in online games or e-mail chats.

To find something on the Internet, people often use powerful computer tools called "search engines". You can search for a type of product such as sports shoes, or a brand name, such as Nike. The search engine will give you a list of websites where you can find these products. These websites may be specialist shops such as a Nike shop, or they may be general stores, called malls, which sell a variety of goods

Internet shopping offers a number of benefits for the shopper. The most important advantage is convenience. You can shop when you like as the online shops are open 24 hours a day, and you do not have to queue with other shoppers at the check-out counters. Secondly, it is easy to find what you are looking for in the Internet. Even our-of-print books may be ordered on line. Finally, it’ is often cheaper to buy goods through the Internet, and you can tell the shop exactly what you want.

The main disadvantage of Internet is that you can’t actually see the products you are buying or check their quality. Also, many people enjoy shopping in the city and miss the chance to talk to friends. Some people are worried about paying for goods using credit cards, so Internet companies are now finding ways to make on-line payment safe.

Internet shopping, is sure to become more and more popular in the years ahead. It promises to change the way we buy all kinds of thingsfrom tonight’s dinner to a new car.
