To the Editor,

I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to Smithville. We moved here from New York City, so I am used to reading excellent newspapers such as The New York Times. In fact, we still have the Times delivered on Sundays. The entire family enjoys reading the recipes(食谱) in the magazine, as well as the Styles section.

The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story. I' ve never read an article that doesn't contain at least three or four spelling or grammatical errors. For instance, in last week's issue, you misspelled the word “secretary” used a singular verb with a plural noun, and used “it's” as a possessive(所有格). And that was just in the lead story! In case you never went to elementary school, “it's” means “it is.” It's not a possessive adjective!

It's a pity that this tiny little hick (乡下) town has only one newspaper, because I' d like to have a choice to the newspaper you publish. I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can' t spell correctly, how can you get your facts right

I' ve been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. Please cancel my subscription(订阅 ).And buy yourself a dictionary.

Sincerely,

Jane Z. Jones

B. The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story.

54. Which statement of the following is not true according to the passage

A. The writer once lived in New York City, so he was used to reading the Times.

B. The entire family enjoys reading the Styles section in the magazine.

C. The writer has long been planning to express his dissatisfaction with the local newspaper.

D. It is obvious that the editors of the newspaper are not very careful about their work.

Psychologists ( 心理学者) tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock, is the way our brain and our personality react to the strange new things we encounter ( meet ) when we move from one culture to another.

Culture begins with the "honeymoon stage". This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from "jet lag" but we are frightened to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are  in some kind of great adventure.

Unfortunately, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This period of cultural adjustment(调整)  can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival of pulling away from the new culture.

The third stage is called the "adjustment stage". This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!

The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can deal with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.

There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don't know about. This is called “against culture shock”. Surprisingly, this happens when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

55. When does culture shock happen

A. When you reach your teens

B. When you move to a big city

C. When you meet foreign people for the first time

D. When you go to live in a foreign culture

56. What does the phrase “jet lag" mean in the passage?

A. 喷气机            B. 时差                C. 腿部疼痛               D. 长时间旅行

57. How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock

A. Lonely and depressed               B. Bored and homesick

C. Happy and excited                 D. Angry and frustrated

58. How could the third stage be described

A. Adjustment     B. Rejection      C. Enthusiasm     D. Anger

59. Why against culture shock be a problem

A. It hardly ever happens.            B. It is extremely stressful.

C. Most people do not expect it.       D. It only happens to young people.

  Listening material

Text 1

M: How are you getting to the airport?

W: Well, I haven’t really got any choice. I’m afraid I have to take the bus. My car is at the garage getting repaired and a taxi is just too expensive.

Text 2

M: Has your husband returned from Tokyo yet?

W: Yes, he came back just a couple of days ago. But he’s leaving Paris for London tomorrow.

Text 3

W: Good afternoon, officer. I’m a stranger here. Can you tell me how to get to the post office.

M: Yes, Go up this street and take the first turning on the left. The post office is next to a children’s park. You won’t miss it.

Text 4

W: I received a letter from my aunt two weeks ago. But I’m up to my neck in work so I can hardly find time to write back.

M: If I were you, I would send her an e-mail. It’s so quick and convenient! Your aunt is sure to be happy with it.

Text 5

M: In America, where labour costs are so high, ‘ do-it-yourself’ is a way of life.

W: Really? No wonder many people repair their own cars, build their own garages, even build their own houses there.

Text 6

MNewspapers and magazines often refer to the word ‘SOHO’ —S-O-H-O, SOHO. But I don’t know what it means. Could you explain it to me?

W: Well, SOHO means ‘ small office and home office’. With the use of computers, more and more people work at their homes. They needn’t go to their offices.

M: Are computers that useful?

W: Yes, they are. People can work faster and better with the help of computers. But they can also make a lot of people lose their jobs.

M: So in this modern society, it’s necessary for us to learn more so as not to fall behind.

Text 7

M: Why do you look so upset, Ella?

W: Well, I‘ve got a math exam tomorrow and I really have to study. But my roommate has several friends visiting from her hometown and I can’t hold my attention with them in the room.

M: How about the school reading room? It’s very quiet there.

W: Yes, I know, but the reading room is closed this weekend for repairs.

M: That’s right. Did you try the classroom? It’s open 24 hours a day, right?

W: Some club is having a meeting there and I was asked t leave this afternoon.

M: Well, there’s always the city library. It’s not so pleasant to go out in this weather, but it’s only a 10-minute walk.

W: Yes, I suppose so. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to walk in the rain. Oh, I guess this is the only way if I want to get any study done. I’d better hurry. Bye!

Text 8.

W: I understand how you feel, sir. But there simply isn’t any room. The person who took the booking must have forgotten to write it down. I’m afraid it was just a mistake. He is new, you know.

M: Just a mistake? Do you realize that I’ve invited some very important people to dinner? It could cause me to lose an important business partner.

W: I’m sorry, sir. I suggest you call them and explain the problem. I’m sure you’ll find several other very good restaurants around there.

M: I can’t get in touch with them now. They are probably on their way at this very minute. Surely you could fit one more table in.

W: Not unless you’d like me to put you in the hall, sir.

M: Well, that’s better than nothing.

Text 9

M: How are your new neighbours, Susan?

W: they seem nice enough, but their son is driving me crazy.

M: What do you mean?

W: He comes home every night around 10 with his car radio on loudly. It stops as soon as he turns the car off. But by then my kids are wide awake.

M: Oh, no.

W: Oh, yes. Sometimes it takes us until mid-night just to get them to settle down again.

M: Have you tried talking to them?

W: We haven’t even really met them yet except to say a quick hello.

M: You are not going to like them when you do meet them.

W: I know, but I feel stupid complaining.

M: You said it was driving you crazy.

W: Well, I’m just not getting enough sleep and neither are the kids.

M: Maybe you could go over sometime with a little gift: a plant for the yard or something. Then you could talk about your trouble with them. Remember, the longer you wait, the harder it’ll be to do it politely.

Text 10

W: Now, back to the news. A tour bus carrying high school children from Boston ran off a highway exit on Friday morning, killing four children and injuring more than 30 people. Forty-two music students, aged 10 to 13, from Oak Hill High School in Boston, five teachers and two bus drivers were on the overnight trip to Canada. They were to take part in a band concert. Andrew, a 12-year-old boy who was on the bus, said that all the children were asleep at the time of the accident. The cause of the crash has yet to be decided. Police said the bus went down a hill and landed on its side. Two girls and two boys were killed and several other people were thrown from the bus. Thirty-six people were treated at hospitals but most are now out of danger. The school remained open on Friday. School officials were sent to the homes of the four who died. The children are very upset. Many are waking around classrooms crying and hugging each other.
