11,000 birds in flu cull By EMMA MORTON THE deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has struck a turkey farm in France —the first time the virus has struck commercial birds in the EU. The French farming ministry said tests had confirmed the disease on the farm in the Ain region, in the south-east of the country. After some of the 11,000 turkeys on the farm died from the virus, the rest were culled. The entire farm has been isolated. Bird flu has spread across Europe, but has so far only been found in wild birds. Nigeria, Egypt and India have recently reported major outbreaks in poultry. Meanwhile, a doomsday NHS plan to deal with a bird flu pandemic in Britain was revealed yesterday. Hospitals will be run like military bases, with security guards on doors and staff in masks and protective suits. Ops will be cancelled and former medics who left the NHS within the previous two years will be recalled. Buildings will be split into “infection zones” to keep bird flu victims from other patients. Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt wanted the plans kept secret to prevent panic but Birmingham Heartlands Hospital went public last night. Bosses at the hospital expect 27,000 people to be struck by bird flu locally in the event of a pandemic. Medical chief Mark Temple said: “Should this virus mutate to become a human infection, humans would have no immunity and it would sweep across the population.
