[英文原文] Jobs are like roads. Some have fast speed limits; others require a slower pace. Some feature nice scenery; others offer drudgery. Some lead up mountains; others slam into dead ends. And these delineations should make it easy to decide which jobs to take: If it’s quick, uphill, and full of perks, just grab it. Right? Not so fast. While recognizing and seizing opportunities signals a successful person, you have to make sure it’s the right opportunity if you’re going to be truly successful (i.e. happy, content, and impassioned about your work). Because jobs are like roads in another way -- even a great one can take you someplace you’re not really interested in going. Before considering a new job and all its benefits, ask yourself the following three questions: What do you want to do with your life? Everybody knows the answer to that question, right? Wrong. In fact, a lot of people don’t even bother to ask; instead, they wait for their careers and relationships to define their goals. Which is a lot like heading out on a trip without a road map. (And in this case, the trip is your life.) So don’t get lost. Sit down and have a long talk with yourself about what you want out of life. Then think about how your career can help you achieve those life goals. Career goals should serve life goals, not vice versa. Where do you want to live? Environment plays a huge role in our emotions. Figure out where you want to live -- and more importantly, why. You may not be able to land a good job in your dream place, but another locale with similar characteristics and a better career opportunity could be a fine alternative. Just don’t get caught someplace you despise because a good job is located there. You won’t be happy. Are there people you can’t live without? Job opportunities can take you away from friends, families, lovers, and even spouses. Jobs that require lots of travel can be particularly taxing on relationships.
