More students looking for psychological help

作者:Han Bing…    文章来源:China Daily    点击数:    更新时间:2009-6-6

Xiao Zhu, who graduated this year, makes a lot of effort to polish his resume and post it out - but he never accepts an invitation for an interview.

"It's a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder," explained Gao Yumei, vice-secretary-general of the Hebei Psychological Counselors' Association, who said Xiao had once failed a job interview and had found it impossible to go to another one.

Another client, Li Fang, had refused to go to a job fair unless she was accompanied by her parents, and she became reluctant to talk and refused to leave her home when the job-hunting season began, he said.

The global financial crisis has left some 7.5 million college graduates facing mounting pressure in their search for a job. And according to China Psychological Health website, the number of students opting for psychological consultations has doubled this year compared to 2008.

"Besides the tough economic situation, Chinese parents have given their children too much protection, which makes them unable to tackle problems independently," said Gao, an expert for the website.

"When the job-hunting process begins, many do not know what to do and feel very anxious."

Gao said other psychological consultation centers have also seen a sharp rise in the number of students looking for help, adding that many centers received 50 to 60 last year, most saying they were confused and depressed.

"When they come to us we help them clear up their confusion," said Wei Guihong, a psychological counselor at Nanjing University. "But to do that they must avoid distractions."

According to Wei, students get distracted when they see classmates make different choices or when their parents interfere with decisions, adding: "Our job is to help them to talk about what they want, and make them realize that gain and loss go together in every choice."

But despite the rising figures, those opting to seek psychological help still only make up a small section of students.

Zhou Li, a counselor at Renmin University of China, said it had 5,000 students yet records show only 700 to 800 had sought a psychological consultation since Sep 2007. Of those, only about 20 to 30 had gone regarding stress caused by looking for a job.

Zhou said many Chinese people, including students, do not pay much attention to their psychological needs and many still disregard the idea of having a consultation.

"Their doubts are quite normal as many students do not know what a psychological consultation is and what kind of help it can offer," said Han Buxin, a researcher at the Psychology Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Science.

But some have realized the importance of finding peace of mind. Lin Dandan, a student at Nanjing University, said: "I need to know my problem from an objective and professional perspective. Just like the old Chinese saying goes: Standers-by see more than gamesters."
