Scissors and dye can provide short-term relief for those emotional knots.

Mia Farrow's iconic pixie cut for her role in Rosemary's Baby (filmed when her marriage to Frank Sinatra was in ruins) was not the result of an annual visit to the hairdresser. Legendary hair stylist Vidal Sassoon revealed much later that the cut was necessary to fix Farrow's horrendous DIY attempt. He told Vogue magazine, "She said, 'I can't tell you why, but I was angry and I got the scissors, and I started to carve.' "

Farrow's desperation should not be mistaken for snips in the name of style. She was cutting hair to mediate mental anguish and the haircut-as-therapy route is a path many women have chosen to take. Take student Roslyn Helper. She had just graduated from high school and was attending the country's most prestigious university. When her home and work life fell into disarray, she impulsively lopped off her chestnut curls.

Dealing with a death in the family, the demands of full-time tertiary education and her parents out of town, she took matters into her own hands. "All this stuff was piling up and I was really stressed out," she says. "I just got to a point where I needed to take control. I basically just started cutting it and kept going and going and going until there was nothing left except a bit of fuzz."

The makeover provided momentary release but her problems were not mended miraculously. In fact, they mounted. Boys gave her no attention on the bus, children unashamedly stared and shopkeepers who once politely smiled now scrutinised. "It's amazing what hair, or the lack of, means to people," she says. "I have never felt so judged before in my life. I mean, I was treated like a social outcast."

Without the security blanket of long hair, she felt displaced and isolated. "After cutting mine, I had nothing to hide behind. I felt so exposed," she says. "It really forced me take control of myself and my identity more than anything."

Psychiatrist Dr David Castle, the co-author of Living With Your Looks, specialises in anxiety disorders and the ways they can manifest externally. "There is a very strong heritage in our society, in fact, many human societies, on the value of augmentation of appearance for people's mental state," he says.

"A woman's hair carries a strong emotional and cultural investment. It can express life, attractiveness, femininity, sexuality, health [and] personality to name just some aspects."
